ADAM KNIGHT

The story begins at age 13. After getting bored with the clarinet and the school band scene, I decided to play the guitar. My favorite guitarist at the time was C.C. Deville of the band Poison. I took a few lessons, started playing with some friends, and by 12th grade we were playing out in Atlanta clubs.

I definitely had the bug for performing, writing, and improvising. After two years of college I took some time off and formed the band KGB (Knight, Goodrich, and Bouchard). We were all very influenced by hip-hop, funk, jazz, and rock. KGB did well in Atlanta, producing a full length album, and eventually opening for acts like Incubus and Maceo Parker.

During this time my taste for jazz was developing so I enrolled in a summer program at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. Soon after I decided I wanted to go back to school and study jazz full time. My next endeavor was earning a Bachelor of Music degree from Georgia State University. While studying jazz there, I met some great players and formed The Subject, a jazz/soul/funk project. At this time I was heavily into artists like Grant Green, John Scofield, and Soulive.

When I graduated from Georgia State I knew I had only begun musical journey. I was teaching and performing but I knew I wanted to continue studying jazz, composition and arranging. Mainly I wanted to find a way to make a living in music. Back to Boston I went. I got accepted to the New England Conservatory. There I pursued a Master of Music degree in jazz performance. At NEC I had the opportunity to study and perform with some of the most talented students and faculty. I will never forget that experience.

After graduating in 2006 I moved back to Atlanta and joined GOLDEN. Sky Clark was a musician friend of mine from back in the day and he thought I might want the job. I currently teach Applied Guitar and History of Rock Music at the University of South Carolina Upstate. You can also find me doing jazz gigs around the city.
